Articles and tweets claiming that the Indian government will buy 50 bulletproof Audi cars for the upcoming G20 summit, which would cost over Rs 400 crore are going viral on social media.

TMC MP Saket Gokhale tweeted a news article from DNA claiming the same. The tweet was accompanied by a hashtag that said "#ModiGovtsPREvent". The article published by DNA is titled "Indian government buying 50 bulletproof Audi cars for G20 Summit, may cost over

Rs 400 crore".

FACT CHECK:

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) stated that the claim is false. It mentioned that the government is not buying 50 bulletproof Audi cars, but has leased 20 such cars for Rs 18 crore as a standard protocol to accommodate the security needs of #G20 visiting leaders. PIB Fact Check added that no cars have been purchased.

The article published by DNA has been edited to make factual changes. It issued a Corrigendum, and changed the title to “G20 Summit 2023 preparations in full swing in Delhi, details inside”. It now states that the Government of India has leased 20 Audi Bullet Resistant cars for Rs 18 crore to accommodate the security needs of visiting leaders, as it is a critical event from a security point of view.

Evidently, it is clear that the claim of the Indian government buying 50 bulletproof Audi cars for the upcoming G20 Summit is false.
