Fact Check: Students Were Not Promised 50 Marks for Attending PM Modi’s Rally
Fake notice claiming Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand University awarded 50 marks to students attending PM Modi’s event.
To mark the completion of 25 years since the formation of Uttarakhand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Rajyotsav (silver jubilee) celebrations held in Dehradun.
During the event, the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation for multiple infrastructure and welfare projects worth over ₹8,140 crore, aimed at accelerating the development path of the state. He also extended his heartfelt wishes to the people of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand and praised the region’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
Referring to the establishment of Uttarakhand under the leadership of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Modi described November 9 as a historic day symbolising the resilience of the people who fought tirelessly for the creation of the state. He added that, over the past 25 years, Uttarakhand had become a model of stable and inclusive development.
However, around the same time, social media platforms began circulating posts claiming that students attending Prime Minister Modi’s public meeting would be given 50 marks.
Viral Claim on Social Media
The viral posts alleged:
“A programme will be held at Dev Bhoomi University, Uttarakhand, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the chief guest and will address the students. The university authorities are worried about whether students will attend the PM’s event. Therefore, they have offered 50 internal marks to students who attend the programme. This offer was reportedly made only to second-year B.Tech (CSE) and BCA students, though students from other courses are also part of the university.”
Some media outlets carried similar reports.

A notice allegedly issued by the university mentioned that students who attended the programme organised as part of the Uttarakhand State Formation Day celebrations would receive 50 additional marks.
Believing this to be genuine, some media organisations published stories claiming it was true.
Lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan also shared the alleged university notice on X, stating:
“Dev Bhumi Uttarakhand University to award 50 marks for attending Modi’s rally! And how many for shouting Modi Modi?”

Fact Check
There is no truth in the viral claim.
A close examination of the notice circulating online reveals several errors. The notice carried no date, which is highly unusual for any official university circular. It also lacked the name, signature, seal, and official stamp of any authorised university officer. These details are mandatory in authentic notices.
Because of the absence of these essential elements, it was evident that the viral notice was fake.
When we searched using relevant keywords, we found reports from several national media house such as India Today, The New Indian Express, and The Indian express confirming that the viral claim was false.
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check division, the Government of India’s official fact-checking agency, also clarified that the viral letter was fake.
“A letter allegedly issued by Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand University is being circulated on social media, claiming that students’ attendance at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s programme has been made mandatory and that internal examination marks will be given for it. The letter is fake. The university has issued no such order.”
The university management also clarified to the higher education department that the letter in circulation was not genuine.
The administration stated that: The notice lacked any official letterhead, reference number, or authorised signature. It was not issued through any official university communication channel. It was never approved or circulated by the institution.
The Registrar of the university clearly stated:
“The university has not issued any such notice. We request students, parents, and all concerned individuals not to believe such misleading information. For any clarification, please contact the university or administrative authorities directly.”
