A CCTV video footage is shared virally showing a young man snatching a chain from an unsuspecting woman walking down the street on Twitter with the claim that the person snatching the chain is a member of YSRC party. The claim in Telugu goes “ఆడవారి మెడలో గొలుసులు కొట్టేసే @YSRCParty దొంగలు. ఆదమరిస్తే మీ మెడలో గొలుసులతో పాటు మీ ఒంటిమీద బట్టలు కూడా కొట్టేస్తారు అని మరోసారి ప్రూవ్ అయ్యింది. రాజకీయాల్లోకి రాకముందు నాన్న చదువుకోమని పంపిస్తే ఇలా మెడలో గొలుసులు కొట్టేసిన అనుభవ పాఠాలు చెప్పావా . @ysjagan‌.? #EndOfYsrcp

When translated, it claims: “Chain-snatching thieves @YSRCParty It has been proved that if you remain unaware of such thieves, they would rob you both of your ornaments and even your clothes. Did you teach party leaders about chain-snatching with the experience you gained when dad sent you to the school to pursue academics @ysjagan? #End of Ysrcp”

Fact Check:

The claim is False. The video is from February 2018 and shows the CCTV footage from Chennai.

When we extracted keyframes from the video, and performed Google reverse image search, we found that the video was published by a few YouTube channels with the caption: “Chennai Chain snatching CCTV footage”. The description of the video states: “A chain snatching incident was captured on CCTV camera in Chennai’s Kundrathur area. The visuals clearly show a man grabbing chain from a woman’s neck while she was returning from grocery shopping. The woman fell down and the chain snatcher escaped on a bike with his accomplice. The police are on the lookout for the duo. According to reports, the woman was reportedly being followed by the accused, who targeted her in broad daylight.
