Fact Check: Viral video of stray dogs chasing two women on a scooter is from Berhampur in Odisha but not from Hyderabad

The stray dog menace is increasing by the day in Hyderabad. A 4-year-old was mauled by stray dogs in broad daylight while another was chased by 40 stray dogs in Tolichowki.

The stray dog menace is increasing by the day in Hyderabad. A 4-year-old was mauled by stray dogs in broad daylight while another was chased by 40 stray dogs in Tolichowki.

Amidst this, a video of two women traveling along with a kid on a scooter, chased by dogs and bumping into a parked car is going viral on social media platforms like Facebook with the claim that the incident occurred in Gandhinagar, Hyderabad.

In the 24-second long video which contains CCTV footage, women travelling on a scooter are chased by stray dogs. The motorist rams the scooter into a parked car, and as a result, all those on the vehicle fall on the ground and are injured. Fortunately, the dogs stop chasing them and run away. At the beginning of the video, the place is mentioned as Gandhinagar 7th lane.

The claim in Telugu goes as: “హైదరాబాద్ గాంధీనగర్లో కుక్కలు బీభత్సం సృష్టించాయి. కాలనీలో ద్విచక్రవాహనంపై వెళ్తున్న మహిళలను కుక్కలు దాడి చేసేందుకు వెంబడించాయి. ఈ క్రమంలో వాటి నుంచి తప్పించుకునే ప్రయత్నంలో వెనక్కిచూస్తూ.. స్కూటీ డైవ్ చేసింది. దీంతో ముందువైపు రోడ్డుకు పక్కన పార్కు చేసిన కారును ఢీకొనడంతో ఒక్కసారిగా యాక్టీవ్ బండి పై నుండి ఇద్దరు మహిళలు , ఓ బాలుడు ఎగిరిపడ్డారు.”

The claim that the incident occurred in Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, is false. The incident occurred in Berhampur, Odisha.

When the key frames extracted from the video were searched using Google reverse image search, we found a few posts mentioning that the incident occurred in the Gandhinagar area of Berhampur city in Odisha.

Even the PTI News Twitter account shared the viral video with the caption “Caught on Camera | Scared of being bitten by stray dogs, a woman rammed her scooter into a car parked on the side of the road in Berhampur city in Odisha. Both women and the child sustained multiple injuries in the incident.”

Taking this as a cue, we searched with the keywords “dogs chase scooter in Gandhinagar”, and we found that several news websites published this viral video.

According to republicworld.com, two women and a child narrowly escaped tragedy after being chased by stray dogs. The incident took place when a woman, riding along with another woman and a child, rammed her scooter into a car after being chased by the dogs in Gandhinagar area of Berhampur city.The trio sustained multiple injuries in the incident. The entire incident was captured on a CCTV camera. One of the victims said that they had been going to a temple around 6 am when a pack of dogs began chasing them. It was then that the woman who had been riding the two-wheeler decided to increase the speed of the scooter fearing an attack, and rammed into a car parked beside the road.

According to newindianexpress.com, women named Supriya and Sasmita and their son Saikiran were on their way to a temple when the incident took place. The trio was taken to a private clinic with injuries on the head and waist.

Hence, the viral video shows an incident that occurred in Berhampur, Odisha, but not in Hyderabad. The claim is false.
