Fact Check: Time-lapse video of earthquake in Indonesia is misguiding
time-lapse video is being shared on social media with the claim that it shows the satellite imagery of the earthquake happening in Indonesia.
An earthquake of 5.6 magnitude struck the west Java town of Cianjur in Indonesia in November, 2022. According to the authorities, more than 300 people were killed, as several buildings collapsed in this disaster.
Meanwhile, a time-lapse video is being shared on social media with the claim that it shows the satellite imagery of the earthquake happening in Indonesia.
The video was shared on Twitter as well as Facebook.
The video was shared with the caption: "Satellite image of the earthquake taking place in Indonesia. No escape for those caught in the active earthquake zone. Everything was destroyed in the path of the earthquake."
Fact check:
The claim is MISLEADING. The video is from 2018 and is not recent.
When we performed a Google reverse image search of the keyframes extracted from the video, we found several reports published in 2018.
A video was published by a YouTube channel named Geospatial World on October 4, 2018, titled 'Satellite images shows massive destruction from the Indonesia earthquake and tsunami'. The description of the video states: "The powerful, 7.5 magnitude earthquake that rattled the northern coast of Sulawesi island on September 28, 2018, caused tremendous damage. Homes throughout Palu, Indonesia, have been flattened. A series of tsunami waves decimated the coastline. Destructive flows of mud and soil destroyed several inland areas in the city of 300,000 people."
We also found an article in The Washington post published on October 2, 2018. The article discusses the damage done due to the earthquake. It also shares images of the Indonesian city of Pulu before and after the tsunami.

A video was also published by Kompas TV, a private news television network in Indonesia.
Hence, the viral video is not from the recent earthquake in Indonesia, that occurred in 2022 but from 2018.
