The image of Amul ad taking a dig at GST price is not original, but an edited one

This sparked outrage from several sections of the country. Social media has been flooded with comments and memes on this issue.

New Goods and service tax rules have come into effect from July 18, 2022. After this, customers have to pay GST on prepacked and labeled food items, and hospital rooms costing more than Rs 5000. Following this packaged food items like curd, lassi, fish, meat, paneer and buttermilk are likely to get costlier.

Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) MLA Gandra Venkatramana Reddy shared an image of an advertisement showing an Amul girl taking a selfie with politicians with a huge text caption 'Ab ki Baar GST ka maar'. This was shared by the MLA with the comment "Galat Sarkar Tax 5% hike on milk #dhokhebaazModi"

The same was also shared by the social media convenor of the TRS party, Manne Krishank, and others as well.


Fact check:

The claim that Amul released an ad with Amul girl to take a dig at new GST rules is FALSE. The image is a morphed version of Amul's ad that was published in 2014.

When we performed a Google Reverse image search of the viral image, we found a few websites stating that it is an ad from 2014 after BJP won the Lok Sabha elections. The caption on the image is 'Ab ki bar, Bhajap sweekar'.


Taking this as a cue, we searched for the image on Amul hits on the company's website. All the Amul ads are uploaded on the website under the name Amul Hits.

When searching the Amul hits section for the year 2014, we found the viral image posted on the website page.

The Amul campaign was started by daCunha's father Sylvester daCunha in 1966 along with illustrator Eustace Fernandes and Usha Katrak, among others. The topical ads came-in in March 1966, where 1 ad was produced a month. These days almost 5 ads come out every week.

Hence, the image shared is an altered image the viral image is NOT an Amul ad taking a dig on new GST prices. It is an old image of an Amul ad that was published in 2014.
