Fact Check: Man throwing ink on EVM is not related to 2024 general elections

EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) are used to record votes during an election. It aims to ensure faster and accurate vote counting while minimising manipulation or any kind of human errors. A few political parties are questioning the transparency of EVMs and demanding switching back to use of ballot papers.

A few political parties are questioning the transparency of EVMs and demanding switching back to use of ballot papers. The leaders of these political parties have been opposing the use of EVMs every time elections are held. Recently, a video has become viral on social media where a person wearing a white shirt with long hair throwing ink at EVM machines at a polling booth. Then he is caught by the police personnel and users shared it with a claim that it is a recent incident from the 2024 general elections.

Social media users shared the video with the caption: “Nagpur man threw ink on EVM & was chanting anti-EVM slogans Public showing outrage towards EVM still why only public is punished is this forceful election ? The post was accompanied with hashtags #ElectionDay #ElectionCommissionofIndia #Elections2024 #LokSabhaElections2024 . 

Fact check: We found the claim is false, the video is from 2019 and is not related to 2024 general elections.

During the Google reverse image search, we found on Oct 21, 2019, ANI uploaded the video on their social media account with the caption “ #WATCH Thane: A Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader, Sunil Khambe threw ink on the EVM at a polling booth while voting for #MaharashtraAssemblyPolls was underway today. He was raising slogans of "EVM murdabad" & "EVM nahi chalega". He was later taken to a police station by police”.

As per NDTV: “BSP worker on Monday threw ink on an EVM at a polling booth in Maharashtra's Thane district”.

Basing on the above media reports, we concluded that Sunil Khambe, a BSP worker, threw ink on EVM at a polling booth in Thane District of Maharashtra in 2019 and that the incident is not related to 2024 general elections.
