Fact Check: Viral video does not show 'Clouds taking water from River Ganga', it shows Tornado formation in Maharashtra

A video showing tornado-like formation is being shared virally with the claim that the clouds are taking water from Ganga in Allahabad for the first time.

Several users shared the same video with claim in Hindi on all platforms of social media including Facebook, Twitter. The claim goes as "इलाहाबाद के संगम में गंगा से बादल पानी ले जाते हुए यह पहली बार हुआ है। प्रकृति का अद्भुत दृश्य देखें.... हर हर महादेव".

When translated claims "This is the first time that clouds are taking water from the Ganga in the Sangam of Allahabad. See the amazing view of nature.... Hail Lord Shiva."

Fact check:

The claim that the viral video shows clouds taking water from River Ganga is FALSE. The video is not recent too, it is from 2018 and this phenomenon occurred in Pune, Maharashtra.

The keyframes of the video are extracted and searched using Google reverse image search. In this search, we found that the video was taken in June 2018 and the tornado-like formation was sighted in Pune, Maharashtra.

According to the articles published in June 2018, a tornado-like phenomenon was seen near Nazre dam in Ranmala village of Purandar in Pune district, catching the local people by surprise. Southwest monsoon has just arrived in Pune and conditions are just about to become favorable for continuous rain.

According to the preliminary observations by a team of city-based experts from the Centre for Citizen Science (CCS), the phenomenon lasted for about 2 minutes and many local people took pictures and recorded videos of the incident.

Anything in the path of the tornado-like metal covers of motor pumps and tin roofs of cattle shelters was flown away but no damage to property was reported. After the funnel-shaped wind column subsided there was intense rainfall said the CCS team, primary conclusion revealed that the tornado's duration was around 90 to 120 seconds. The total distance covered by it was 800 to 1,000 m (including water and ground).
