Flash floods, cloudbursts, and extreme rain have become alarmingly common. In 2025 alone, cloudbursts triggered deadly flash floods in Uttarakhand, claiming dozens of lives and leaving many missing. Similarly, in northern India, Gangotri Dham, a pilgrimage site attracting lakhs of devotees every year during the Char Dham Yatra, stands empty. About 300 shops in its premises have shut after a flash flood hit Dharali village, 20 km before the shrine. The village, located on the banks of the Bhagirathi river, remains cut off due to road damage between the shrine and Bhatwari block. Communication lines are down, and movement of essential goods has stopped.
Meanwhile, an image of school children purportedly killed after a roof collapse is circulating with the claim that it shows such an incident in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, following massive flash floods. Some users shared the image with the Hindi caption: “रास्ता देखती रह गई माएं । बच्चे स्कूल से सीधे स्वर्ग चले गए UK (UTRAKHAND) ईतनी भयानक तसवीरें देखकर जिंदगी एक खिलौना सा लगती है। मुझे ये फोटो डालते हुए भी अजीब सा फील हो रहा। Social media पे ईस तरह के content कम से कम ही डालें। भगबान सबको अपने श्री चरणों में जगह देना।”. When translated, it claims: “Mothers are waiting for the way. Children went straight from school to heaven in Uttarakhand. Life seems like a toy after seeing such horrific pictures. I feel weird even posting this photo. Minimize such content on social media. May God give a place to everyone at His feet.” Many users shared the image tagging the hashtags #JhalawarTragedy and #Rajasthan, implying the image shows the roof collapse incident in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, where several students died during school hours.

The claim is false. The image is AI-generated and does not show any real incident.
A search for news about school building collapses in Uttarakhand yielded no information or visuals regarding such an incident. Newsreports about the roof collapse in a school in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, confirm at least seven student deaths and 29 injuries after a portion of a government school building collapsed. However, the images in these reports are entirely different from the viral image.
Additionally, a post by Uttarkashi Police stated that the viral picture, generated by AI, is being circulated on social media, falsely linking it to the Harshil-Dharali disaster, thus spreading misinformation. They labeled this as completely misleading and advised against sharing unverified news.
When we checked the viral image carefully, we found the watermark of ‘Meta AI’ at the bottom of the image. Here is the screenshot of the image, where we can see the watermark.
The image was checked using multiple AI detection tool Hive Moderation detected 99% probability of AI generation.
We also checked the image using another AI detection tool called Was it AI, which also confirmed that the image is AI-generated.
Therefore, the viral image is artificially generated and unrelated to recent incidents in Uttarakhand or Jhalawar, Rajasthan. The claims are false.
