Claim :
Viral video shows 2 BSF soldiers who are Pakistani spies, caught with Rs 96 croreFact :
The video is an old one from January 2018, shows Kanpur police seizing Rs 96 crore from a builder
The National Investigation Agency has arrested a CRPF personnel for allegedly sharing sensitive information with Pakistan intelligence officers. The accused, Moti Ram Jat, was involved in espionage activities and had shared confidential information related to national security with the Pakistan handlers since 2023. He has been booked under sections 15 (pertaining to Terror Act), 16 (punishment for Terror Act), and 18 (conspiracy and related acts) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Hindustan Times reported. Reports claimed Jat was honey-trapped in 2023. Pakistani officials, pretending to be a woman, contacted him on social media and later obtained details such as convoy movements.
Amidst this, a video showing 2 people accompanied by police officials, is shared by social media users with the claim that the persons seen are 2 BSF jawans who are Pakistani spies. They were caught with Rs 96 crore. In the video, we can hear the police officials questioning the people about the money found.
The claim in Hindi goes as “मिलिए देश के इन जयचंदों से जिन्होंने चंद पैसों के लिए देश को पाक के हाथों बेच... 2 BSF जवान - पाक जासूस... ये लोग ट्रेन में पकड़े गए, उनके पास 96 लाख रुपए नकद थे... जब कुदालों की तलाशी ली गई, तो एक घर में 96 करोड़ रुपए नकद मिले.!!” When translated, it claims “Meet these Jaichand of the country who sold the country to Pakistan for a few bucks... 2 BSF jawans - Pak spies... These people were caught in the train, they had Rs 96 lakh rupees in cash... When the house was searched, Rs 96 crore in cash was found in a house.!! “
Here is the archive link of the claim.
Fact Check:
The claim is False.
Firstly, when we checked the articles about CRPF personnel who were arrested by the NIA, we did not find any images or videos showing the accused.
When we extracted keyframes from the viral video and searched using Google reverse image search, we found that the video is an old one from the year 2018, when Kanpur police recovered Rs 96.40 crore from Anand Khatri, a builder in Kanpur. This video was published by a channel named Taak Jhaank with the title “Breaking news 96.40 crore recovered from Anand Khatri, builder of Kanpur” on January 27, 2018.
Upon further search, we also found other news articles about the incident that occurred in Kanpur. ANI shared the images of the accused, which match the visuals in the viral video. The tweet states that all the accused arrested in connection with the recovery of Rs 96 crore in demonetised currency have been sent to jail, booked under several sections.
According to the report published by ABPLive, as many as 16 people, including a noted builder, were arrested by the Kanpur police in connection with the seizure of over Rs 96 crore in demonetised currency notes from the builder's ancestral house in Swaroop Nagar.
The seized amount belonged to Anand Khatri, the builder, and over a dozen others owned the remaining amount. They were arrested, along with the builder, and sent to jail after being booked under various sections. This is the biggest seizure since old currency notes in the denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 were banned in November 2016. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had gathered inputs about some companies and individuals involved in converting illegal currency into legal money and shared the information with the Inspector General of Police, Kanpur, Alok Singh.
Hence, the claim that the viral video is a recent one and shows the BSF jawans arrested by the NIA is False. Though, a CRPF jawan was arrested recently on alleged espionage case, the viral video is not related to that incident. The video is an old one from the year 2018 and shows the Kanpur police recovering Rs 96 crore from a builder.
