India celebrated its 76th Republic Day on January 26, 2025. The foundation of Indian democracy, Indian Constitution came into effect on this date, years back. It is the world’s longest Constitution which ensures justice, equality and adaptability through provisions like reservations for marginalised groups, artistic heritage and 100 amendments reflecting evolving needs. The Indian Constitution is the longest-written constitution in the world. Originally, it had 395 Articles, 8 Schedules, and over 145,000 words. Now, it has grown even longer with amendments, and a detailed guide for the governance of our country. Moreover, it would be amazing to know that the Constituent Assembly drafted the Constitution and worked for 2 years, 11 months and 18 days. The original Constitution of the country was handwritten in both Hindi and English. Prem Behari Narain Raizada, a calligrapher, wrote it in Italic style. The pages have illustrations by renowned artist Nandalal Bose and his team which reflect the culture and heritage of India, which makes it not just a legal document but also an artwork.
Meanwhile, a video of a person claiming to be in London library looking at a copy of Indian Constitution, is heard saying that the book he is looking at is the original Constitution of India and he claims that the document does not contain any images of Hindu Gods like Lord Rama, Sita, Laxman and Krishna. This video is in circulation with the caption in Hindi that goes “बेहद अहम जानकारी बहुत बहुत साधुवाद! आपने ये वीडियो शेयर किया मेरी तरह अधिकतर बहुजन लोग इस दुष्प्रचार से भ्रमित थे। आज सच्चाई सामने आ ही गई।“ When translated, it claims “Very important information. Thank you very much! You shared this video Like me, most of the Bahujan people were confused by this propaganda. Today the truth has come out.”
When translated, it claims “This claim of Manuvadis also turned out to be false. Look, today a new information has come to light that there is no photo of any Ram, Krishna, Sita in the original Constitution. These people were fooling our society till date. This information should go viral which is in your hand.”
Here is the archive link of the claim.
Fact Check:
The claim is False. When we searched for the place where the original copy of the Indian Constitution is, we found that the original 1950 Constitution of India is preserved in the Parliament Library Building in New Delhi, India. The original copies are kept in special helium-filled cases.
According to a video published by CIR-NIScPR, the original Hindi & English versions of "The Constitution of India" are kept in the Library of the Parliament of India in New Delhi, preserved in pristine condition. Ever wondered how the original versions – calligraphed on fragile handmade parchment paper – still survive in the original form more than seven decades after they were first prepared? In the 80s, experts from the CSIR-National Physical Laboratory & Getty Conservation Institute, USA, zeroed in on the concept of 'hermetically sealed glass cases' under an inert gas atmosphere to protect the "The Constitution of India" from damages due to oxidation, microbiological deterioration & air pollution.
In March 1994, two hermetically sealed display cases were installed at the Parliament Library, in which were safely displayed the original handwritten documents of "The Constitution of India". Even today, every year, the performance of the cases and the safety of "The Constitution of India" is evaluated by a team of CSIR-NPL scientists.
We also found a copy of the Indian Constitution uploaded on the Library of Congress website, we confirmed that the images of Lord Ram, Sita, Lakshman, and Lord Krishna are present on the pages of the Indian Constitution.
The original manuscript of the Indian Constitution, handcrafted by calligrapher Prem Behari Narain Raizada, is adorned with 22 exquisite illustrations by Nandalal Bose and his team that visually interpret its core principles and values. These images reflect India's rich cultural heritage and aspirations for its future.
An article published in ABP news also states that both the Hindi and English editions of the Constitution were handwritten. It is the longest handwritten Constitution in the world. It was written by Prem Behari Narain Raizada. The original Constitution is decorated by artists from Shantiniketan.
Therefore, the claim that the original copy of the Indian Constitution does not have images of Hindu Gods etched on its pages is False. The Indian Constitution was handwritten and adorned with exquisite illustrations by Nandalal Bose and his team to reflect India’s rich culture.
