The Gaza Peace Summit held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, brought together global and regional leaders to endorse the newly agreed ceasefire and peace plan aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza. Co-hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the summit emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian relief, reconstruction, and a sustainable path toward peace. Leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a two-state solution and diplomatic engagement as the foundation for long-term stability. The Egyptian president thanked Trump, Qatar, and Turkey for their roles in advancing the peace process and expressed hope that the plan would pave the way for the implementation of a two-state solution. Trump described the moment as historic, noting that humanitarian aid was flowing, civilians were returning home, and reconstruction should begin.
Meanwhile, posts have been going viral on social media claiming that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not invited to the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit.
Fact Check:
The claim is misleading. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited to the peace summit and was represented by Kirti Vardhan Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs.
To verify the viral claim, we conducted a keyword search and found several reports confirming the invitation for the Indian PM to the peace summit held in Egypt. According to the Times of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among over 20 world leaders invited by U.S. President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to the Gaza peace summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. However, due to short notice and scheduling constraints, neither PM Modi nor External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar could attend. Instead, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti V. Singh represented India at the summit. India Today reports that despite receiving a personal invitation from President el-Sisi, Prime Minister Modi opted not to attend, which sparked debate, with some questioning whether it reflected strategic restraint or a missed opportunity to assert India’s position on the global stage. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif endorsed President Trump’s mediation efforts, even nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize, a move that drew attention during the summit.
"This is no reflection on Kirti Vardhan Singh, whose competence is not in question; but given the galaxy of grandees present, India’s choice could be seen as signaling a preference for strategic distance, which our statements don't convey," Congress MP Shashi Tharoor posted on X.
Further reports confirm that Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh reaffirmed India’s unwavering dedication to peace, stability, and enduring security within the Middle East.
Hence, the viral post claiming that PM Modi was not invited to the Gaza Peace Summit is misleading. Minister of External Affairs represented India in Sharm El-Sheikh.
